Tour Point

History of Denpasar

Denpasar is the capital city of the island of Bali, and home to almost 800,000 people. The market town was formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Badung and the seat of local royalty.

During the Dutch invasion in 1906, the Balinese king and his court famously commited suicide in front of Dutch troops rather than surrender to them. This heroic resistance is today commemorated by a large bronze monument at Puputan Square, where the royal palace once used to stand.

In 1958, Denpasar became the offical capital of the province of Bali, and its now the center of commerce, education, industry and tourism.

Denpasar offers a host of attractions, including traditional markets, museums, temples and shopping malls, not to mention some fantastic restaurants and cafes.

Bajra Sandhi

This giant monument depicts the history of Bali and honors the Hero of the Puputan War. A walk up to the balcony offers good views of Denpasar, and the park is also popular for jogging, cycling and other outdoor activities.

Located in front of the Bali Governor's Office in Renon in Denpasar, the monument is also known as the Monument to the Struggle of the People of Bali.

Inside the structure are dioramas tracing the history of Bali, starting with the beginning of the Balinese kingdom and the introduction of Hinduism, all the way to present day.

Bali Museum

Also known as "Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali", this museum is built in traditional Balinese royal style and features over 10,000 exhibits, displayed in four different pavilions.

Tabanan displays theatrical masks and musical instruments, Karangasem sculptures and paintings, Buleleng textiles, and Timur houses archeological finds.

The museum is located next to the Hindu temple Pura Jagatnatha and is also within walking distance from Puputan Square.

Balinese Dance Lesson

During the Denpasar City Tour, you have the opportunity to learn traditional Balinese dance. The lesson is held at Bali Museum, one of the attractions visited during the tour, and both men and women are invited to join.

Badung & Kumbasari Market

Pasar Badung located on Denpasar's Jl. Gajah Mada is open 24 hours, seven days a week. This is where the locals go to buy fresh produce, and the best time to visit is first thing in the morning.

Everything from fruit and vegetables to meat, fish and spices are sold here, not forgetting the all important daily offerings (canang) that you see everywhere in Bali.

A trip to Pasar Badung can easily be combined with a visit to Kumbasari Market just across the river, where you can buy souvenirs, carvings, paintings and more.
